What you make
The product, its ingredients and the names it is sold under. Company, product, menu, ingredient and brand names may not use the word “halal”, and names that refer to or resemble non-halal products, such as bacon or beer, are not eligible. Every raw material must be traceable to its original producer.

Where it is made, or will be made
Made in Malaysia, at your own plant or a contract manufacturer's: the Malaysian certificate (SPHM) comes from the competent authority, JAKIM or MAIN/JAIN. Made abroad: a body on JAKIM's recognised list, or JAKIM's international-manufacturing procedure, which a company registered in Malaysia applies for (since 1 January 2024). Goods only relabelled in Malaysia are not eligible.

The scheme
JAKIM certifies under nine schemes, among them food and drink products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and medical devices. The scheme sets the rules and the term: 2 years for food and drink products, 3 years for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. A company registered overseas that produces in Malaysia gets 2 years, and an international-manufacturing certificate is valid 2 years.

Your company's size
Annual turnover in ringgit (RM) sets the size band; micro is under RM300,000. For food and drink products the band sets the permanent Malaysian Muslim staff on duty in processing: one (micro, small) or two (medium, large). It also sets a Malaysian company's yearly fee; a company registered overseas that manufactures in Malaysia pays Jadual 2 per application instead, RM2,500 (ASEAN) or RM10,000 (other countries).
